A good pair of leggings, with a crew sock (must be a white sock)* perfectly slouched over top, paired with a slightly cropped; but still oversized crewneck, a slicked back bun (slicked back because I am covered in sweat), and a disturbingly comfortable shoe.
The above is the only outfit my brain can comprehend at the moment. I’m not sure if it’s the lack of inspiration I’m feeling within my closet, or the lack of inspiration from outside sources, but the only thing I want to be wearing is activewear.
Sporty is the only way I have ever known how to dress. When I was 7-13 years old I used to make my Mom buy me knee-length athletic shorts (pretty sure I need to burn all photos from this era, but instead I’m sharing them with you) from the Boys department at National Sports (IYKYK).
It’s pretty evident that I have an older brother… and I wanted to be JUST like him when I grew up. Over the years the word chic has slowly integrated itself into my everyday dressing (really grateful for this), but Sporty has never left the equation.
Entering, what I believe to be the perfect Sporty Chic guide to athletic wear:
The Sweatshirt
Different sweatshirts/hoodies in my closet serve different purposes. I have my “over workout clothing sweatshirts”, and “my pair with jeans sweatshirts”. Yes, sometimes I mix it up, but usually I’m following strict guidelines. When pairing with athletic/athlesiure wear (which is what we’re talking about here) I prefer a slightly cropped fit that is still extremely oversized (i.e., either not covering, or only half covering my bum… I'm just a girl after all!).
Now this may be slightly controversial… but my personal favourite “cropped but still oversized” sweatshirt, is one I have to crop myself. I now have 3 in the collection. It’s the Oversized Boyfriend Crew from Aritzia. I buy either an XL, or 2XL, and I cut 2-3 inches off of the bottom.
Here are some of my other favourites in the sweatshirt/fleece department, that fit all my criteria:
Halfdays Fleece | Sporty & Rich Crew | Daily Drills Zip | Patagonia Fleece | Adanola Crew | FP Movement Crew | Stussy Crew | Lululemon Zip |
The Sets & The Singles
Nothing is more motivating than wearing a damn good set. When they say look good, feel good, I think this is specifically what they’re referring to. I’ve seen many over the years, but these are my current favourites:
